Yoga Practice Routine

Class Recordings, March 20 and 22, 2018

This week I taught students the chant "oṃ śāntīḥ" for our meditation. The yoga practice emphasized forward bending postures and exhale technique for a lightening, relaxing effect. The classes were similar, with the evening option being a little more relaxing to prepare students for winding down at the end of the day.

Class 3 - Backward bending poses, focusing on strengthening the upper back and arms

Class 4 - Twisting poses, with a strengthening, stretching and cleansing effect

Class 5 - Balance practice and side-lengthening postures for stability, space and focus.

Class Recordings: February 15, 2018

This week we focused on preparing upper body strength for adho mukha svanasana (downward facing dog), as well as a breathing ratio with pause after inhale and exhale to build capacity to work with bandhas later in the spring. The meditation object was the moon and light--with the intention of helping students recognize their inner knowing, even when it seems covered and hazy. My hope was that a meditation on moonlight would also have a cooling, soothing affect after the work of so many back-bending and core strengthening postures.

This week marks the middle of winter!

To coordinate with the season's shift toward longer days and spring, classes continued to work on cleansing twists and added some uplifting backward bending postures. The morning class used a pause after inhale and meditation on spring growth to help warm and wake the system, while the evening class includes pause after exhale and a meditation on moonlight for soothing, relaxing effect.

Class Recordings: January 25, 2018

Classes today focused on developing a capacity for listening to the body, and for yoga practice as an opportunity to build a relationship with the body, breath and inner self. We are still working on yoga poses that stretch and strengthen the spine in preparation for staying in a deep twisting pose, and the breathing and meditation practices are designed to be inward and reflective.

Class Recordings: January 18, 2018

These recordings are taken during my regular weekly yoga classes. This week we are working on twisting postures and preparing for some poses that require a little more flexibility in the legs, hips and spine (like janu sirsasana) and strength in the upper back and core.

Both classes include a pranayama for a lengthened exhale and a meditation on snow.

Class Recordings, January 11, 2018

Please enjoy these recordings from my regular weekly yoga classes on Thursday, January 11, 2018.

Both classes emphasize building upper back strength in forward bending and backward bending poses, with the goal of preparing for twisting poses and the seated forward-bend, janu sirsasana. The yoga poses, breathing and meditation were also designed to give a "cleansing" effect, which is useful at the beginning of the year, after the excesses and disruption of the holidays.

Yoga Nidra Relaxation Exercise

Yoga Nidra is a style of yoga which emphasizes reaching a deeply meditative state through gentle breathing and visualization exercises. The word nidra in fact means sleep, and state of meditation is described as a waking sleep, in which you are conscious but completely resting in body and mind. The result for most students is attaining a level of relaxation and ease they've never felt.

Here is a simple 10-minute Yoga Nidra exercise in which you move your attention to different spaces of the body in a repeating pattern. You'll begin lying down in a comfortable position, with your head and limbs supported in a way that there is as little strain on your body as possible. (You can find ideas for a comfortable savasana pose here.)
