Private Instruction

Yoga uses a range of techniques which balance our body, breath and mind to promote total well-being, improve comfort and relieve pain, reduce anxiety and depression, manage stress and change habits. In private lessons, I adapt yoga poses, breathing and other tools to develop a yoga practice you can do at home which is tailored to your needs and interests.

What to expect:

You'll begin your yoga lessons by scheduling an initial consultation.

At this consultation, you'll complete an intake form, and we will discuss your health, lifestyle, goals and concerns.

I will guide you through some simple movements and breathing exercises to observe your physical health. We will discuss what movements feel good and what might aggravate your condition.

Once I have an understanding of your needs and current circumstances, I will develop and guide you through a yoga practice personalized to you, revising the practice depending on your response. The yoga practice will include conscious breathing and movement, and may also include a meditation.

The yoga practice is carefully designed to work for you, taking into account your goals, desires, lifestyle, age, health, current strength and flexibility, experience with yoga, the amount of time you have for yoga, and other factors.

You will receive a written copy of the yoga practice to refer to at home. I will encourage you to practice every day, as consistent practice is critical to the process of healing and development in yoga.

Once you have done the yoga practice regularly for a week or two, we will meet again for a follow-up appointment. At your follow-up lesson, I will observe your practice, answer questions, discuss how it is working for you, and make any adjustments that improve your practice and magnify its effects.

After that, we will meet on a regular basis as needed to check-in and continue to develop your practice. From time to time, you will be ready for a new practice.

The initial consultation is typically 90 minutes long, and follow up lessons are typically 60 minutes long.

Why do a daily yoga practice?

A daily yoga practice is a powerful tool for healing and balance. Because it is a multi-faceted practice that works with the body, breath, mind and emotions, it can relieve many issues.

I work with you, one-on-one, to listen to your needs and interests, to understand what hurts, what feels stuck or where you want relief, and I write a do-able daily yoga practice to address those things.

The following conditions are highly responsive to a daily, individualized yoga practice:

  • Chronic pain in muscles and joints, including back pain, neck and shoulder pain, or hip pain
  • Breathing difficulty, asthma or shortness of breath
  • Sleeping difficulty, such as night waking or difficulty falling to sleep
  • Restrictions in mobility
  • Stress, anxiety, depression or 
  • Digestive discomfort, such as IBS or constipation
  • Generalized disorders like fibromyalgia, arthritis

How does yoga practice work?

Yoga is a holistic approach to healing and personal growth. Yoga integrates techniques like moving, breathing, focusing on different things and even using your voice. These various tools are what make yoga holistic--it works at every level, from the physical body, to the more subtle energetic function, to mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Through regular yoga practice that reaches all these levels, you address the root cause of pain, disease and dysfunction.

Yoga is not a "quick-fix." I know, it's hard to hear that in our I need it now culture. Healing takes time and is the result of gradual change.

You will probably feel better right away after your first practice, with a calmer mind and more relaxed body. Ongoing, regular practice will address the deeper root of issues that affect your health and habits, and the positive effects of your yoga practice will be more sustained and far-reaching.

My role as a teacher is to listen, understand your needs, and design an appropriate practice that will be meaningful and effective for you, and review the practice as your goals or circumstances change.

Yoga is a low-risk, high-yield method of healing. Research shows that yoga can be an ideal complement to other forms of medical treatment for relief of pain and supporting your return to health. The yoga practices are gentle, do-able routines that will take you toward balance and well-being, without added strain.

Initial Consultations, are held at Bodyworks, 2809 Lincoln Ave, Evansville, IN.

Follow-up appointments can be done in person at Bodyworks, or as a video conference via Skype.

Private Lessons for New Students

I also teach 30-minute Private Lessons for beginning students who are looking for a brief introduction to yoga before they begin group classes.

Rates for these lessons are $30 for 30 minutes.

I schedule these lessons before or after a class so that students can observe or take part in class right away.
